6th Grade Narrative Writing Scoring Guide

Structure
    Writes to the prompt (big event in the middle answers the prompt)

    Has a main idea in each (beginning, middle, end) paragraph
           
    At least 3 related details in each paragraph

    Establishes a setting in the beginning (time and place)

    Response is multiple paragraphs

    Response is at least 300 words

Descriptive Language
    At least 5 adjectives

    At least 3 adverbs (only one can be “manner”)

    At least 2 appositives

    At least 2 sensory details for each category (things seen, things heard, and at least one other sense)

    At least one character or the setting is described using two related details

    At least 3 uses of figurative language

Sentences
    At least 2 types of sentences are used

    At least 6 compound sentences

    At least 3 complex sentences

    At least one compound, complex sentence

    No more than two sentences start with  the same word

    At least one use of dialogue

    Closing sentence ends story and connects to the beginning or next experience

    Key word from prompt (or synonym for it) is in the writing
