Our Story
While teaching 5th grade in an inner-city neighborhood,
Christina Supe- Executive Director and Creator of Get Ahead
Writing- began to develop a method of delivering writing
instruction which would meet the needs of English Learners
and help them to be able to write proficiently.
In 1995, California's academic standards were just being
established. Even though the school district had a clear idea
of which writing applications should be taught, there were no
clear instructional guidelines or suggestions for helping
students meet the expectations.
During the course of the next eight years, Supe created
instructional and professional development methods for the
writing application standards. Because of the unique
approach, both methods are now patent-pending.
Supe designed a paralleled program for teachers and
students. Classroom teachers model for students, share the
planning, guide as students write, and then offer time for
independent practice. Get Ahead Writing trainers provide the
same support for classroom teachers as they learn to use the
instructional method. Trainers demonstrate lessons in
classrooms, share the planning of instructional sequences
with the teachers, coach teachers as they deliver the
instruction in their own classrooms, and encourage teachers
to continue to deliver the instruction regularly.
Get Ahead Writing is not a program. There are no required
materials to purchase. The instructional method and its
success are based on the level of training of the classroom
teachers.
Get Ahead Writing was an instant success! In early 2003,
Christina Supe was asked by the Orange County Department
of Education to work with a school to help them improve
student writing. She was then invited by the Superintendent
of Pomona Unified School District- Dr. Thelma Melendez de
Santa Ana- to host a professional development session at the
district's annual conference.
In its first six months, Get Ahead Writing also worked with six
individual schools in Pomona Unified on improving writing
instruction, and their results were amazing. Since 2003,
schools which have worked with Get Ahead Writing have an
average of 64% more students proficient or advanced on the
California Standards Test (CST) in Language Arts than
schools in the same district which have not been trained. The
longer schools work with Get Ahead Writing and implement
its method, the better the results are in improving student
achievement.
Get Ahead Writing offers support to districts as they strive to
improve student writing. We create a vision of what
classrooms, schools, and districts look like when effective
writing instruction is taking place. Get Ahead Writing works
with districts to establish customized professional
development programs to suit specific needs.
