What We Do
Since 2003, the experts at Get Ahead Writing have worked with districts and schools on designing and implementing district-wide and school-wide writing instructional programs. If it has to do with writing - we do it! From Writing Boot Camp for Kids to district level professional development, our wide range of services and customized approach allows us to meet the individual needs of our clients.
At Get Ahead Writing, we know that the only thing needed for fabulous writing instruction is a well-trained teacher. We are known for our research-based professional devleopment model which includes theory, in-class demonstrations, instructional coaching, feedback, and practice.
We do not sell binders full of materials, posters, charts, videos, etc. We come to you- to your school, to your classroom, with your students, to show you how to deliver the instruction effectively.
We work with teachers to understand the standards, to plan logical instruction, to analyze student writing, to be models for their students as writers, to feel confident in their ability to effectively teach writing, and to ask themselves, "What can I teach to make the writing even better?"
Over and over we are told by teachers and administrators that this is the best writing program they have ever seen. In fact, this is a model of instruction more than a program, and that's likely why everyone loves Get Ahead Writing so much!
Writing
Get Ahead Writing consultants work with schools on improving delivery of instruction of the Common Core State Standards in writing by developing Writing Process Instructional Sequences that focus on the three text types and stuctures- to inform/explain, to give opinion/argue, to narrate- as umbrellas for a wide variety of writing tasks such as: reporting, explaining, responding, convincing, describing, comparing and contrasting, narrating, etc.
The Writing Process Instructional Sequences allow for an in-depth understanding of how the CCSS in writing fit into a day-to-day instructional program.
Content Integration and Explicit Vocabulary Instruction with a Literacy Focus
Get Ahead Writing also provides support in content integration with a literacy focus and explicit vocabulary instruction of the language of the disciplines. Writing is emphasized in all classrooms and in all content areas. (Recommended for 7th -12th grade teachers)
English Learners' Literacy and Achievement
Experts in the area of English Learners, Get Ahead Writing also offers a unique program called Long Term ExceLlence (LT ExceL). Consultants work with district and school personnel to create Acceleration to Excellence plans for identified Long Term English Learners. The program uses ten characteristics and more than 40 criteria to evaluate students and plan for their acceleration.
The Get Ahead Writing consultants provide professional development and direct student services to implement the plans as well as support to improve the literacy instruction of the targeted students.
